“For myself the past is the source (for all art is vitally contemporary). I’m drawn to the primitive, the ritual and fetish elements, to the symmetrical plastic order (peculiarly basic to both primitive and classic concepts, so relating the two)”

I’ve often found myself in front of Cy Twombly’s works—sometimes deeply moved, other times completely entranced. Yet, his art always felt a bit elusive, much like the man himself, as portrayed in interviews.
I realized that to truly connect with his pieces, I might need a fresh approach, perhaps a glimpse into a more intimate aspect of his inspiration. I delved into books, catalogs, and even watched a documentary, but nothing seemed to fully satisfy my curiosity.
Then, I stumbled upon a small but revealing detail: Cy’s deep appreciation for African art, with its vibrant beadwork and sturdy woods, and his fascination with the art of ancient Italic tribes, whom he imagined as his neighbors from the terrace of his home in Bassano in Teverina.
These primal, authentic geometries began to blend in my mind with his Untitled works, and suddenly, a new understanding emerged. Standing before one of his paintings again, I felt a profound sense of clarity and contentment.
